Chaplaincy

In the 1970s, the Roman Catholic bishop of Ghent appointed a chaplain for the international students in Ghent, OBSG (Ontmoeting Buitenlandse Studenten Gent - student residence) and the International Roman Catholic Community of Ghent. The founding father and pioneer was father Charles de Hemptinne (1933-2017).

The current chaplain is father Bert Vanderhaegen.

He works and lives in the University Hospital Ghent, Corneel Heymanslaan 10, 9000 Gent where he is also chaplain for the patients and the staff of the hospital (since 1996).

What does the chaplaincy do?

  • Is available for all international students, regardless of their religious beliefs
  • Offers guidance, advice and spiritual care for international students and persons with international roots
  • Helps to find solutions for all kinds of problems international students may encounter
  • Celebrates the eucharist and other sacraments with the International Roman Catholic Community of Ghent at Christus Koning church on Sundays and Solemnities at 11.30AM
  • In the chapel of the University Hospital UZ Gent (Corneel Heymanslaan 10, Ghent) daily mass is celebrated at 8 AM (Monday through Saturday). Mass is celebrated in Dutch and English/French when people who don’t speak Dutch attend the mass. If possible inform Father Bert in advance by This email address is being protected from spambots.
